Fly Me to the Moon

I love this mini-site about the different phases of the moon and how they affect water, desert, neighborhood, etc. The information is presented like an old newspaper, the colors and graphics are fun, and the content is informative. The current issue deals with water and how it has affected Manhattan in the past. The interactive map is really cool; it is interesting to see how much landfill has been added to the island since 1865.

Schwag in Style!

In the heat of the worst economic downturn in decades, we helped the Leasing Studio create their own bailout plan for perspective retailers at their Renton, WA development, The Landing. The bailout bucket featured an unusual suite of kitschy items to help retailers through tough times and remind them that there are still bright spots on the horizon. The bailout bucket was so well received that it has even been hailed by one Seattle Weekly writer as "The best goodie bag I've seen in forever".

Automating Image Sharpening in Online Applications

Working in an agency setting, where the crispness and clarity of your images is extremely important, writing web systems that automatically generate thumbnails can be problematic. When resizing images downwards, as is often the case in thumbnail generation, pixel values are approximated from their original size. These approximations can result in thumbnail images which are blurry and difficult to read. The bigger the change in pixel size, the more dramatic the effect. So if you resize a 900×900px image into 120×120, you will see a major difference in clarity.

Old Police Headquarters Website

The gorgeous new Old Police Headquarters website is now live. Explore rich attention to detail, thoughtful photo collage work and subtle interactive maps. I especially like the all background content and transitions in color from page to page. Everyone did such a nice job on this site. It’s surely one of our finest websites to date and a worthy extension of the brand.

Shameless Promotion of a Product: Part 11 Kaweco Al Sport Pen

I love my pen. It goes with me everywhere I go. I ordered it up a while ago from, no surprise, Hard Graft, and have been drooling over it ever since. It writes so smoothly and feels like a dream in my hand. I think it is even making my sketches better, just like a kid with new shoes making him run faster. It features a hand finished, anodized surface that feels sort of like a less textured Rhino truck lining. It seems indestructible and produced by Kaweco, a German brand that has been producing pens since 1883.

Who Is Dan X. Solo?

This post isn’t about the history of Dan X. Solo. It is a personally indulgent post about being obsessed with the name Dan X. Solo.

Marclay Video Quartet (2002) Reorganizes Music History, Blows Mind

I caught this video selection at Seattle’s Western Bridge (http://www.westernbridge.org ) in 2007 and am writing about it now because I still think about it, two years later. To paraphrase whoever writes for Western Bridge—Marclay builds a forty-foot synchronized four-channel video quartet by sampling musical pieces from the history of sound cinema. Video clips from famous pieces of music in film are projected along side of one another, cutting in and shifting over the course of 14 minutes.

Typeface of the Month: Neutraface Slab

It’s here! The newest addition to the already outstanding typeface Neutraface is a wonderful serif extension of the popular font family. Christian Schwartz designed it, with the help of Kai Bernau and Susana Carvalho. Released through House Industries, it is currently my favorite typeface series. I love the result, and their careful and thoughtful serif additions are top-notch.

Retail: Get Local with Twitter

Unless you're in a tech oriented field or a figurehead of popular culture, it's often hard to find value in Twitter's limited functionality. This sentiment holds especially true as its use applies to businesses. Most people are quick to dismiss Twitter as a non-sensicle indulgence for social junkies to alert the world to what they had for breakfast, however it's all a matter of perspective.

Heaven is a Place on Earth

A couple weekends ago I was fortunate to attend my favorite biyearly event, Specific location shall remain undisclosed due to personal unwillingness to blow up the spot! Lets just say it’s damn close to heaven on earth and every year I find all the junk I never dreamed I wanted.  Twenty dollars will buy hours of entertainment sifting through the detritus that pours out of the nooks and crannies of Washington State.

Get Smart—Willingly Reengineer Your Very Own Mind

I’ve been in love with Seed magazine since I discovered it a few years ago. Not only does it expound and explain the radical transformations that are steering scientific thought- it does so in a way that allows even a bonehead like myself (easily distracted by pretty designs and interesting information graphics) to understand the social, economic, artistic, and political implications of seemingly obscure discoveries and concepts in the scientific community.

Radical Analog Ancestor of Google - The Whole Earth Catalog

In high school my awesomely nerdy older sister once told me about buckyballs, perfectly linked hexagonal carbon rings in the form of a hollow sphere (twenty hexagons and twelve pentagons – like a soccer ball). These stable molecules were named for Buckminster Fuller because of their resemblance to his geodesic dome structure.

Humble Beginnings

While digging through the archives, I stumbled across these snapshots of Urban Influence's first office from over 6 years ago. It was only two guys and a lot of hard work, but everything starts somewhere. We've grown up quite a bit since then, with the last photo acting as comparison of where we're at today.

Where It All Began

When I was a wee little tike, probably around the age of 6 or 7, my Dad gave me an old book on lettering. The book was filled with all kinds of different typefaces. The book and its contents quickly became an obsession. I suddenly had to draw all of them. Anytime I was creating something that required letters, they had to meticulously drawn, simple letters definitely wouldn’t do.

1948 Porsche Custom Sports Cabriolet

Talk about inspiration. This is such a beautifully designed car. It's simplicity in it's finest. The attention to detail is beyond anything I've seen in a long time, I hope to see this car in person someday. The interior and engine are so clean. I've always found classic automobiles a source of huge inspiration and this car is right there at the top of my list. The car photos I've dressed up were taken from here, cooperclassiccars.com.

Designer Inspiration

When I find myself hitting a wall or looking for creative inspiration there is a manifesto I often read. I have kept a copy of it for years and it is generally one of the first things I hang up in my workspace. The document I am referring to is Bruce Mau's Incomplete Manifesto for Growth. I have found it to be incredibly useful and hope you do as well.

Behind the Browser: Continental Warranty

It’s not always easy to tell people how cool your latest software project was. One of the biggest challenges of software development is making things that are in fact quite complicated seem easy. Sometimes looking back towards past solutions you once viewed as novel or unique, you think to yourself – “Of course, how else would I have done that?” Stepping through this doorway brings you a new appreciation for what you’ve learned through the successes and failures discovered along the way. This column is about those little solutions that are sometimes forgotten with time.
