Died Young, Stayed Pretty

Died Young Stayed Pretty

Attention all Rock and Roll poster art obsessives: new Documentary 'Died Young, Stayed Pretty' is playing this Friday in Seattle.

Thanks to a heads up (thanks Greg) by a friend I'll be attending an evening dedicated to the dissection of Graphic Design's hairy and bareknuckled underbelly, the rock and roll poster scene. The street level guerilla design and distribution of gig posters has been practiced by everyone who has played in a band, dated a band member, been friends with anyone in a band, or parented a teenager in a band — which pretty much covers almost everyone alive in the United States. This true american right of passage is the gateway drug for many graphic designers working today.

Bang Bang

Mark Weaver Bang Bang

Can't say enough good things about the art of Mark Weaver. His collage work is some of the best around IMO. The use of vintage materials, subtle humor and the choice of color is damn-near perfect. As you can tell, I'm all about inspiration early in this new year and this provides me with a ton.

Daydream Believer

Panorama Newspaper

While visiting friends in Portland I ran across a copy of the latest edition of McSweeny's Quarterly Concern, The San Francisco Panorama (Issue 33, available at mcsweeneys.net). This hefty display of visual and literary virtuosity will go down in history as a celebration of the newspaper format, exploring the outer limits of the newspaper experience. Despite the fact that producing such beautiful, considerate newspaper would be completely impossible to execute regularly given the limitations of a real daily, The Panorama makes a grave and important point: If the physical pleasures and everyday realities of our current literary outlets are to survive, they must push themselves far, far away from the norms and conventions of emerging digital media. Do what digital media cannot. Give readers in-depth, localized writing and engaging points-of-view, presented in an unusual and tactile manner.

Shameless Promotion of a Product: Part V – Diesel Compass Watch

Diesel Compass Watch

Now this is a watch. The Diesel Compass Watch sports dual time zones and an integrated compass. I love the huge main dial and rectangular secondary dial. The compass is a no-brainer, especially for watches. I want the gunmetal version as it looks extremely menacing, like the semi used to bash up KITT in the old Knight Rider episodes. Awesome.

Died Young Stayed Pretty

Friday I attended a screening of Eileen Yagoobian's Died Young, Stayed Pretty — a documentary about rock poster culture.

Nothing like being shoehorned into a tiny theatre with a leaky ceiling on a Friday night to take in a few rambling screeds by the best practitioners of a dying art.

Audi E-Tron

Audi E-Tron

Lovin' this concept sports car from Audi, a sports car concept that is purely electric. This two-seater accelerates from 0 – 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, producing 230 kW (or 313 hp, but I love how it's measured in watts on their site). The lithium battery provides a content of 42.4 kilowatt hours that lasts approximately 248 kilometers or 154 miles. In other words, no long road trips, but to and from work would be fine.

New Heinz Ketchup Packaging

Lovin' this new Dip & Squeeze packaging from H.J. Heinz Co. This breakthrough dual-function package has a base that's like a cup for dipping (now on-the-go!) and a tear-off end for squeezing (no more mess!), plus holds 3 times as much ketchup than before.

This product marks the first ketchup packet makeover for the foodservice industry in over 40 years. Also, it looks like they're implementing a reduced sodium product across its ketchup line... Whoo hoo!

Bonus Detail: Packaging resembles the classic bottle shape, very nice.

Last summer when I heard that the incredibly kind and absolutely inspiring folks at Under Consideration were publishing a book about building and designing portfolios, I sent off a couple of snapshots of my student portfolio on a whim. Amazingly and astoundingly they asked me to ship off my book—soft case, briefcase and all— to be photographed for publication! On leaving the tech world to do tech work

I recently joined Urban Influence as an Interactive Developer after spending years writing software for pure technology companies.  Since it's my first foray into the design industry, many differences strike me, from the number of PhotoShop and Javascript tricks I learn per day to the average number of programming languages open in my text editor simultaneously.  But one of the most striking differences for me, coming most recently from a scrappy startup with a nondescript office sans decor, is the context in which I work.  I am in a converted warehouse with old-Seattle charm sitting in an

An Evening at the WTIA Industry Achievement Awards

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the 15th annual Washington Technology Industry Achievement awards. After a night of great conversation, I was excited to have visited one event with so many intelligent entrepreneurs, developers, and marketers. One of the many highlights of the evening was to see Amazon win well-deserved recognition for their amazing Amazon Web Services platform. Having used the platform myself for various personal projects, I couldn't agree more with the WTIA.

shark The award for Breakthrough Startup of the year was given to VHoldr - an innovative local technology company that enables its users to broadcast in 1080p video using a head mounted camera. Built for activity, this durable HD camera can take footage in extreme conditions you'd feel nervous taking a disposable camera. According to their specifications, the camera also uses a dual-beam laser system to help the user key in on action areas. While this is all kinds of impressive, I could not help but think of this technology's application in marine life (Dr. Evil, I'm talking to you).

PulseCheck - A Tool for Monitoring Websites

I really hate flying. Flying has 2 major drawbacks: one, it requires uncomfortable sitting in close quarters (I'm 6'3), and second, it almost never has internet. On long flights, I do what any other geek would - I break out the laptop, unfold the tray table and try to setup my MacBook without putting an elbow in the nose of the guy watching Gilmore Girls on his iPod. Unfortunately, by the time I have my arms positioned cleanly within my own 6 cubic inches of space, I end up looking like Tyrannosaurus Rex using a keyboard. This is the price of a nerdy habit.

DUI

The other day I stumbled on this old post describing how web development as a trade has an inherently exponential level of complexity adding up to "672 things" the developer needs to keep in mind every day.  I'd actually say it goes a bit beyond that.  It's true that as technology evolves we have more powerful tools to bring ease to cumbersome tasks; the pre-baked SQL in Rails or the pre-baked JavaScript in jQuery definitely help us do more stuff, faster.  But it takes vigilance just keeping up on emerging technologies that can save us time and work.  And by vigilance of course I mean lots of time and work.  For my own (morbid?) curiosity I decided to compile a list of concepts, languages, and tools I've learned over my years working online.

  • Markup/Templating: CSS, ERB, HAML, HTML, XHTML, Web Standards, XML
  • Dynamic/Client-side Scripting: ActionScript, AJAX, DOM, Flash, JavaScript, jQuery, JSON, Prototype
  • Content Management Systems: Drupal, WordPress
  • Databases: Berkeley DB, MySQL, SQL, Oracle
  • Programming Patterns: MVC, RESTful development
  • Programming Languages: C, C++, Java, Perl, PHP, Ruby
  • Programming Methodologies: Agile, Event-based, Extreme, Procedural, Object-Oriented, Stateless
  • Protocols: DNS with BIND, HTTP, XHR
  • Off-site Management: Facebook API, REST, SEO, SOAP, Twitter API, Web Services
  • Operating Systems: FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OSX, Windows, Unix
  • Testing: TDD, BDD, Rspec, rUnit
  • Text Editors/IDEs: Emacs, HomeSite, DreamWeaver, TextMate, xEmacs
  • Usability Concerns: Accessibility, Character Sets, Cookies, Internationalization, Session Management
  • Versioning Sytems: CVS, Perforce, Subversion, Git

Egypt Branding

EGYPTIAN LOVER BABY. The Rebrand.

The entire country of Egypt (well, maybe just the tourism department) just released a new logo and ad campaign. Despite the fact that Egypt's newest effort is more intriguing and energetic than before, I can't help but think the new mark looks a little like a Cher logo from the 90s. Am I crazy? Despite that feeling, I do completely appreciate the attention and effort that it takes to make a hand crafted, calligraphic logo work. I don't mean to sound condescending by any means whatsoever. I just think that rebranding a country filled with some of the most intriguing artifacts and ruins on the planet would be really, really fun.

Minimal Masterpieces

[lwegallery]

I have am a big fan of minimalism. The ability to take a complex thought, boil it down to its purest, most simple form and still communicate the complexity of issue with clarity has always fascinated me. I also really enjoy the visual wit and power of positive and negative shapes in illustration and design. I just came across a piece by Noma Bar that stopped me in my tracks, because it does both. I find his work to be powerful and a great example of how bold messages can be communicated clearly with simplicity.

Inspiring Vision

An old proverb states, without vision the people perish. I find this to be true in design and branding. One could say without vision the brand will perish. I believe that providing vision is one of the most important roles we have as designers. Businesses and people come to us because they need something. It may be a logo, it may be a website, it may be strategy for their brand.

Alex Chilton died suddenly this week, which comes as quite a blow to the music community.  I'm not an authority on Chilton's work and couldn't add anything to the memorial discussion that would come close to matching, for instance, Chuck Prophet's post about why Chilton matters.  It's Chilton's connection to photographer William Eggleston that makes me want to write about him on a design firm's blog this week.  Eggleston is probably one of the best photographers alive, and definitely the most important to me personally, because his work attracted me to art form. Hey! That magazine looks like a website

We're begining to see some desperate flailing from printed periodicals as they try new ways to survive the consumer's mass exodus to interactive content. Apparently Business Week has decided that if you can't beat 'em, you might as well join 'em (sort of). Going with classic helvetica as their primary typography choice and a tightly packed composition, their latest redesign is a bold nod to interactive design both in aesthetic and hierarchy.

Maybe the average consumer's sub-conscious will register this as more relevant than print, however my 2 cents is that they'd be better off rethinking their content distribution model. As more people migrate to digital distribution for news, knowledge and entertainment it will become paramount to innovate in this space rather than beat a dead horse with a sack of old magazines.

I Work For a Seattle Brand Studio

So, What do you do?

When the sun aligns and the poles shift, I get out from behind my desk and into networking mode for a few hours every month. When out talking trade, I often get asked what I do or how much it would cost to brand company XYZ. As someone who lives and breaths branding every day, these are still some of the most difficult questions to answer on the fly.

The average person's perception of brand development doesn't go far beyond the creation of logos, letterhead, packaging or web design (and sometimes even lucky when it extends that far). Brand run much deeper than these surface components and only achieve lasting success when supported by a strong, underlying foundation. This is where many of my hours are spent at Urban Influence and ultimately why the brands we've built have an unprecedented record for success.

Many factors can swing the scope of a branding exercise, but nothing more-so than how healthy the living state of the brand is. I'm not talking about the brochure or the advertisement, but the real emotional experience that exists at the core between consumer and company. How sound is the brand experience when you disregard the surface layer of marketing communications and get to the center? I've found this particular question is the single most important thing you can ask and is best answered with more questions...

Web Remakes that Outshine their Originals

In the world of film, it is rare that a sequel surpasses its original. It's much more common that the original is degraded by a series of sad successors. Examples like Ocean's 12+, Revenge of the Nerds II+, Star Wars Episodes 1-3, and anything starring Keaneu Reaves, are proof that film studios don't need a good plot to make a sequel.

Home improvement obsessed? This site's for you.

Houzz Link Love

My lovely fiancee and I purchased a house last year which has utterly consumed my free time. Not that the house was in bad shape, but as a designer this is what happens when you get free reign over your environment. I recently found this new web community that caters to home design nuts like myself. If you're obsessive about your castle, then I highly recommend you check out www.houzz.com for ideas, inspiration and a network of equally passionate home owners and designers.

Rediscovering Music

Chaun's recent music post got me thinking. Like many of us, I became swept up in the age of digital music. It began with just a few songs, but turned into some full fledged albums and I eventually accumulated a nice library of albums. Then a conversation got me thinking, and led me to a realization that I had lost sight of what makes music so important: the experience.

The Font Game

I should have mentioned this ages ago! John Boardley, founder of ilovetypography.com, developer Justin Stahl, and Kari Pätilä, co-creator of welovetypography.com have built a great typography iPhone app. Not only is the game addictingly fun, with three difficulty levels and over 600 typeface examples, but it's also absolutely beautiful to look at! Check it out here if you're even remotely interested in typography. Be sure to post your score on Twitter!

The Dollar Dreadful Family Library

I stumbled across the Dollar Dreadful Family Library this morning and was amazed by the striking layout and fantastic use of typography! The page serves as a portal to a collection of short stories focusing on mystery and the bizzare. Sample reads have been generously provided, and follow the link to the Bazaarium, a store where you can purchase the short stories among several other interesting victorian goodies. The covers to the volumes look great as well.

Problems with the Federal No-fly List

The recent Times Square bomb scare has raised a lot of questions about national security. One of the most alarming aspects of this attempted attack was how the alleged bomber, Faisal Shahzad, came to very close escaping. While I'm very glad that Shahzad was eventually seized, the fact that he was not apprehended until sitting comfortably on a runway is more than a little disconcerting.

Marlboro is in your Subconscious

Marlboro Racer

With the international ban on tobacco advertising, cigarette companies are coming up with some truly inventive ways to get the message out. Marlboro, who has sponsored the Ferrari Formula 1 team for decades, has unveiled a very sophisticated take on their sponosorship branding. They've distilled the visual essence of the classic Marlboro logo down to a subconsciously penetrating vehicle graphic.

Graphicology has a great write-up on this here.

Typographic Bibles

I've collected many, many books over the past few years since I began designing. Books on branding, books on layout, books on interactive design, books on typography, etc. etc. Some I consistently reference, and others I look through once, maybe twice. However, there are two that I treasure above the rest. The first is my bible, "The Elements of Typographic Style" By Robert Bringhurst. The other is "The Typographic Desk Reference", by Theo Rosendorf. These two books help me daily as a designer, and are incredibly valuable reads to anyone, especially Bringhurst's.

Darth Vader explains URL shorteners

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, people used really large URLs to represent locations on the net. Now days, there are a large number of URL shortening websites (like Bit.ly, SnipUrl, etc..) which translate large urls into shorter ones. This article, explains the basics of how these systems work.

If Websites Were Pop Stars

Fergie

Personification is one of the great tools of communication. To quote Webster, personification is the attribution of human characteristics to something nonhuman. Using personification, we are able to look at the image of some thing and provide an admittedly over-simplified metaphor that others can readily understand. This week, I will be extending this tool to look at several of the internet's most popular websites and my celebrity look-alike that tells the story of this online experience.

So you want to be a graphic designer?

So You Want to Be a Graphic Designer

It was another week at the office, and like most weeks, another student dropped off a portfolio to be considered for an internship. After our young applicant left, we dropped the black leather bound case on the pool table and unzipped it to see what lay inside. The situation was all too familiar, however the work that lay in front of us was not.

This was the first portfolio we've seen that didn't actually have any graphic design in it – No typography, layout, composition, or anything that a designer would be judged on when applying for a design job. What sat in place was a selection of well composed photographs and fine art abstract illustrations. Our applicant wasn't a designer at all, but a traditional artist looking to make the jump into the world of commercial design. Without any preconception or fear of the industry, she came in and put her work at our mercy hoping for the best...

"The Only Thing You Are Interested In Is the Spaghetti."

Maps have always been interesting, especially to designers. There is so much information that needs to be put into maps, regardless of what they are for. With so many little icons, words, and markers it can be easy to confuse viewers and create more of a navigational problem than if there was no map at all. As designers, it can be the greatest test of our skill and knowledge, and in many ways is a perfect example of how design works. The New York subway map has always been an icon of design, and has recently gone through an update.

A Fascination With Typewriters

This past weekend on a trip out to Port Townsend to visit Cassandra's parents, we were curious if perhaps they had any old typewriters that had been passed down through the family. Luckily, they were in possession of an old, what I'm assuming is a 30's vintage Underwood typewriter, in incredibly good condition. It was beautiful, and in what seemed like excellent shape. Always having a fond interest in the history of typography and printing, I was surprised to realize how little I actually knew about typewriters and their history.

How to Throttle Your Web Apps to Simulate Slow Connections

Throttling web applications

Frequently when developing web applications, we developers are lulled into false expectations of application performance while developing an app on a local machine. Network connection speed is an important and inconstant variable of application performance and depending on what you are developing, ignoring it until later stages of development can have regrettable consequences.

Social Media Parodies Itself in Cow Clicker

Mooooo

In what has to be one of the most hilarious Facebook applications yet, software developer Ian Bogost has created a masterpiece with the Facebook game Cow Clicker. The object of the game is simply to "click your cow." That's it. Clicking your cow will earn you "mooooney" that can be used to either purchase more clicks or unlock premium cows. I've pretty much summarized the entire game and it took less than a paragraph.

Some Mid-Century Modern

I haven't ever really spent much time on Etsy since most things I've seen weren't necessarily my cup of tea. But I recently came across a shop that really had me impressed. It featured a great collection of handmade mid-century Eames style inspired furniture. While the selection was limited to a collection of quirky seating options and tables, the variety of design and look is impressive.

The craftsmanship looks great, especially in the upholstery on the chairs and sofas. A lot of care went into these and they obviously serve both function and fashion. A great conversation topic, I suggest checking them out, here.

Why Slacktivism Works (RE: the BP boycott)

Boycott BP

When proclaiming a boycott of BP, the common rhetoric seems to be that you're only hurting the families that own the franchise stations (and not the evil corporation). Brand association is a powerful thing for better or worse, and despite the baseless droning that protest only hurts the innocents in this case, new data is showing otherwise.

A Ghost in the Phone: An Open Letter to Steve Jobs

Ghost in the Phone

Much like marriage, as my iPhone and I continue to discover our relationship together, I have started to notice quirks that were never there at the onset of our relationship. For instance, the subtle way my phone drops calls when someone flicks a lightswtich. Or the way Facetime makes anyone using the forward facing camera look like Jabba the Hut. But perhaps the most fascinating quirk that I've recently discovered with the iPhone 4G is that it seems to have a mind of its own.

Why I Like Apple's Ping: Initial Impressions
