Sunny Seattle

sun

The sun has been out in Seattle for a few days now and it is quite nice! The office was in much need of some vitamin D. Although it is nowhere near spring, this sun has me thinking about warm weather and all that comes with it. I can dream, right? Right. Something I've been doing lately to keep my dream alive is creating warm weather inspired sets on Svppy. Don't know what Svppy is? You should check it out! http://svpply.com/

Updated Portfolio!

Nework

Hey all, we've been extremely busy and haven't had much time to update our site, however we did manage to squeak in two new projects for Endurance and AdoptUSKids. TV expert Courtney Hansen leads the new Endurance campaign, so make sure you click on over to the portfolio and check it out in full. There is also plenty of eye candy for AdoptUSKids, the Nation's leading adoption and foster care resource so go get your sugar fix on.

We've been all kinds of busy but are planning on some much needed updates to the portfolio and some other big changes around the site, so stay tuned!

Everything You Need To Know About Facebook Timeline For Pages

Timeline

The highly anticipated Facebook Timeline has finally arrived for Business Pages bringing a wave of new features and changes with it. All Pages will be converted to the Timeline layout on March 30, but until then Facebook is giving admins a little bit of a grace period to trial and error the new layout.

From a design perspective, this is the most significant transformation to happen to Facebook Pages in a long time, and may require some legwork to get your Page looking the way you want it. But, before you go worrying yourself into a Facebook frenzy, don’t panic! We’re here to break down all the new features for you.

The Better Bacon 'Book'

BB 01

Here's an entry I think Mike would love. It's an iPad app for The Better Bacon Book. It's filled with 20 HD videos on how to make your own bacon, build your own smoker, find the best bacon, etc. And the list goes on—Search through 150 high-resolution photos and 31 recipes from top American and Canadian chefs.

Typeface of the Day: Graphique

I stumbled across this font a few weeks ago, and have been seeing it frequently ever since. It's so simple and pretty I had just had to know what it was.

Bonjour, Bartlett

I'm happy to say my new family addition has made his appearance at the Urban Influence studio. Our new French Bulldog, Bartlett (Barty for short, Barticus occasionaly) has now met everyone and is settling in nicely both at home and here. He's twelve weeks old, and probably the cutest thing you will ever meet.

Mongrel vs. Unicorn: A Surprising Benchmark Test

Most developers who have been developing with Rails for more than 3-4 years will remember the Mongrel Web Server. In the early days of Rails development, Mongrel was generally considered the preferred method of choice for Rails deployments, if for no other reason than the fact that mod_ruby was painfully slow.

Social Media Is Here To Help

The power of social media never ceases to amaze me. Whether it’s asking a question, searching for an answer, or just simply sharing your thoughts, you can usually always someone in the social sphere who is listening.

Earlier this week, we needed a German Translator. Not exactly something you can just pick up at the grocery store, so what did we do? We turned to our fans and followers. One Facebook post, one tweet, and less than an hour later, our need for a translator was quickly circulating the Web.

Take a look:

Tools of the Trade: Part Deux

It's been a while, but I want to pick up where I left off with another installment of Tools of the Trade. This time, I'd like to talk about tools that are more specific to my programming workflow.

It's the Water

I’m a sucker for old beer ads from the 1960s and 1970s – this much I’ve known for a while. Until today though, I couldn't quite pinpoint why these ads resonate with me.

Twitter Turns 6!

6th

On March 21, 2006, Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey sent the very first tweet. Six years later, Twitter has become a force to be reckoned with in the social sphere, hosting over 500 million users. With its 140-character limit, @-tags and hashtags, Twitter is by far my favorite social networking site for it’s brevity and simplicity to connect with users from all over the world.

Personal Kanban: A journey

I first heard about "kanban" years ago, when a former boss and agile coach, started talking about it more and more. At the time, I let it slide as a fad, but it was in the back of my mind as I went through life. It wasn't until last year, when I started looking for a replacement to my failing to do lists, reminder programs, and GTD systems, that I returned to the idea.

Modern Legacy

I’d probably passed by the building hundreds, if not thousands, of times. Commuting to a variety of jobs over the last several years, by car and by bus, I’ve gone by the corner of Denny and Dexter twice a day, almost every day – and yet I’d never bothered to really look at the Seattle Park Department Administration building.

Time Flies When You're Facebooking

Alright, I’ll admit it. I’m addicted to social media. Whether on my phone or on my computer, I am constantly cruising the social Web updating not only my networks, but also listening to what my friends are saying, looking for breaking news, cool pictures, entertainment, the latest deals, and the list goes on. I spend the majority of my time on Twitter, followed by Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and the rest, so when I stumbled upon (no pun intended) this infographic a few weeks ago, the data caught my attention for a couple reasons.

10 Awesome Facebook Cover Photos

Love it or hate it, Facebook Timeline is here to stay. The new design, which officially arrived to all Facebook Pages on March 30, heightens the visual aspects of the social network giving special attention to the cover photo. The cover photo is essentially a blank canvas and is the first thing a user sees when they land on a Page. As the saying goes, first impressions matter, so it’s no surprise that brands are utilizing it to their full advantage to promote their product, their beliefs, their work, and the essence of who they are.

Here are a few cover photos that definitely succeeded in grabbing my attention. What are your favorites? Share in the comments!

The Power of Project Management in Your Personal Life

The term “project manager” can be used loosely to describe anyone assuming the responsibility of seeing a project through its completion.

As a Project Manager at Urban Influence, my job is defined by my ability to plan and execute a project successfully. I spend my day juggling the invisible constraints of the “P.M. Triangle” – navigating the delicate balance between budget, schedule and scope.

I love the never-ending to-do’s, the rush of a tight deadline and the satisfaction of a milestone met and exceeded. But while a challenging client calendar may make my heart skip a beat, my personal goals frequently feel out-of-reach... and are often left to collect dust in the dark recesses of my mind.

Urban Needle

We are truly humbled. There’s really no other way to put it. The fact that the city of Seattle would spontaneously repaint its most iconic symbol, the Space Needle, in a shade of Urban Influence orange has left us speechless.
